Appropriate Toys for Large and Small Dogs

Sophie: I was hoping you could suggest some toys for my pets. I have a Great Dane, Marley and a Pug, Mischa. My Great Dane has already eaten most of the Pugs' toys. I am looking for toys that both Marley and Mischa would like.  Thank you. Maryanne, Boca Raton, FL

Maryanne:  The problem you describe is very common. I'm often asked for recommendations such as this, so here I go.

I recommend toys that are large enough for Marley that he won't choke on them but small enough or have ridges on them for Mischa so she can pick them up and join in the fun too.

Regardless of the type of toy, you will have to watch both of your dogs when they are playing with toys.  It is very easy for large dogs to choke on or eat small dog toys.

Because of this, I recommend hard rubber or nylon toys. I happen to live with two large dogs and have to be careful that they don't eat my toys.  The toys that have lasted well between the three of us are: The Giggler Ball, The Nobbly Wobbly Ball and Animal Sounds XTire Ball.

Make sure the toys you use with your dogs are durable, rated for aggressive chewers and don't have small pieces that can be bitten off.
